
Men, women and children put balloons under their T-shirts to look pregnant and converged in Yonge-Dundas Square as a flash mob on Tuesday—a decidedly silly approach to draw attention to a very serious problem.
“FASD, or fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, are the most common, most expensive and yet most preventable of all mental disorders in the industrialized world,” said Brian Philcox, co-founder of the charity FASWorld.
The “pregnant pause” flash mob is an attention-seeking technique the charity is using to try to get the message out to men and women everywhere: there is no safe time to drink during pregnancy, and no safe amount.
